| Pet shop customers are shunning hamsters, guinea pigs and rabbits in favour of iguanas, skinks and newts. And it's all because of the David Attenborough Effect. According to the Pets At Home chain of shops, demand for reptiles and amphibians has doubled since the naturalist's BBC series Life in Cold Blood began last month. Staff warn prospective buyers to check out the costs and problems of owning certain creatures which might require special diets and the right heat and light for 24 hours a day. They can also live for 20 years or more, and many come from tropical or humid climates and will not survive if released into the wild by owners bored with them. Next week, Sir David looks at snakes, and Pets At Home is preparing itself for increased demand for popular breeds. |
More worrysome and serious is the arrival of the so-called Franken-Fish.
