| A meltdown at the Palm Beach County Supervisor of Elections Office is stoking concerns of even bigger problems for November's presidential vote. With fingers pointing now at Gov. Charlie Crist, a coalition of political groups from across the county held a rare, joint news conference Wednesday to demand "emergency action" by Crist and other top state officials. Leaders of the groups, including the chairman of the county's Republican Party, said they worry about the accuracy of vote counting for the Nov. 4 general election given that nearly 3,500 ballots from the Aug. 26 election are missing. They said state officials must take steps to reassure voters, including personal visits and deployment of election equipment experts to bolster Supervisor of Elections Arthur Anderson. But aides to the governor reacted tepidly to those calls Wednesday. Their message: It's your problem, Palm Beach County. "We wouldn't want to have the appearance of running the election when that's not something we are authorized to do," said Jennifer Krell Davis, a spokeswoman for Florida Secretary of State Kurt Browning. Demands for action have been pouring into Tallahassee offices for days, Davis said. But new urgency came Wednesday with requests for help from leaders of the League of Women Voters of Palm Beach County, the nonpartisan Florida Voters Coalition and both the Democratic and Republican parties of Palm Beach County. "We are all together because we need help, and we don't have confidence," said Sid Dinerstein, the county GOP chairman. |
