Obama attacking Justice Clarence Thomas is a punk move.

Politics: But typical and will be highly praised by the Tom Joyner crowd who like him view the Supreme Court as just another place to put in liberal social changes and not an arbiter and interpretation of laws based on the constitution.

Swedish pedestrians receive secret message from God

World: Via the Local.

Signal boxes located at pedestrian crossings in countries all over the world are designed to spread the word of God, the product's Swedish manufacturer has revealed.

Anyone living in Sweden or the Nordic countries will almost certainly have seen the image of a hand pointing upwards to encourage pedestrians to press the button before crossing the road.

Prisma Teknik AB, the Swedish company behind the pedestrian signals, has now admitted that the hand is meant as a hidden symbol for God. In fact, the company says it has never made any secret of the fact.

"We want to show that there is only one way to reach God and that is up and through Jesus", CEO Jan Lund told The Local.

Though Sweden is not particularly religious, with church attendances consistently low, the country still contains some pockets of religious fervour. One of these appears to be located at Prisma Teknik, a company that supplies pedestrian signals and other technical devices to 60 markets around the world.

Prisma Teknik AB is a family-run business based in the southern Swedish county of Småland, an area with a reputation as Sweden's bible belt.

CEO Jan Lund told The Local that the company's signals point the way to God in 17 countries including Ireland, Austria, Denmark, Norway, Iceland, Finland, Belgium, Israel, and the US among others.

Prisma Teknik's hand points upwards, much in the way that many religious icons or pictures of Jesus have done through the ages. Lund told The Local that this was entirely intentional.

However, Prisma Teknik's hand of God does not go down quite so well with its Muslim clients in the Arab world, who are much more aware of the hidden Christian message than your average Swede.

Even so, the Swedish Christian company still supplies pedestrian signal signs to customers in Saudi Arabia, who promptly cover up the hand when it arrives in the Arab state.

The Local asked Jan Lund why his company does not simply manufacture a special pedestrian signal without the iconic index finger for the Arab market.

"We want to be a servant of God and we have been blessed as a company for 21 years, so we won't change for anyone", he said.

'Terrorist MP' Resigns; Political Death May be a Coma

EU: Weird story that is coming out of the Netherlands.

Wijnand Duyvendak has resigned as MP. His position became untenable following the disclosure that he was involved with an attempt to set fire to the home of top civil servant George Verberg. But attempts to rehabilitate Duyvendak have already begun.

Leftwing Green (GroenLinks) leader Femke Halsema has accepted Duyvendak's decision to resign "with pain in my heart." She stressed that she found him a politician of "integrity."

Halsema suggested that Duyvendak would return again to the Lower House after the next elections. "I am not responsible for the candidates committee, but I cannot imagine that GroenLinks has no place for people that give such an account of their past."

Halsema was referring to Duyvendak's disclosure two weeks ago that he was one of the perpetrators of a break-in to the economic affairs ministry in 1985. The confession was in a press release that his publisher issued to attract publicity for an autobiography by Duyvendak, due to appear on 20 August. But the publicity it attracted was not the kind he had expected.

Led by De Telegraaf, the pressure on Duyvendak mounted. Remarkably, the leftwing newspapers did not spare 'their' GroenLinks either. Thus, De Volkskrant last week described the party as a rehabilitation centre for political delinquents. And it was reporting in NRC Handelsblad - arguably the most leftwing paper - that eventually compelled Duyvendak to resign.

NYTIMES putting out fluff piece on Jon Stewart.

Politics: Pointed out by liberal E&P Greg Mitchell , Michiko Kakutani is the main fluffer...err.. writer with this hilarious bit.

The lead Jon Stewart piece -- blessed with a nearly-half page opening photo -- in The New York Times' Arts & Leisure section tomorrow poses the question in its headline, "Is This the Most Trusted Man in America?"

The answer from writer Michiko Kakutani is yeah, maybe, since The Daily Show is now "a genuine political and cultural force."

That's partly because other cable news shows have been "larding" their coverage with missing teens, celebs, "bloviation" and fake news while the proudly fake news Daily Show sticks to "super-depressing" important issues.

Kakutani claims that Stewart, indeed, speaks "truth to power," even while he claims to only "throw spitballs." He is a rare, non-ideological "sane voice" in the "noisy red-blue echo chamber." A colleague says he "really does care."

DNC Not Helping Local Businesses in Denver for convention.

Poltics: Video and story here.

DENVER -- They were hoping for a boom, but say it's becoming a bust. Local businesses are upset they're not getting the convention orders they were banking on. FOX 31's Sari Padorr reports.

Denver Voters approve car impound measure

Immigration: That has the illegal advocates in an uproar at the establishment and politicians wanted this defeated but now are stunned it passed. But as they always do trying to figure out how not to enforce the will of the people.

A citizens initiative to impound cars driven by unlicensed drivers — specifically illegal immigrants — was approved by voters Tuesday night, even to the surprise of its lead proponent.

But will Initiative 100 stick? The City Attorney’s Office is already considering a court challenge, arguing that the initiative may be unconstitutional.

And a coalition of groups opposed to the initiative — including city and community leaders, as well as immigrant rights advocates — plan on educating Denverites on the “negative consequences” the ordinance could have on immigrants and working families.

“This loss represents a temporary setback for all in Denver who continue to believe that no one should be unfairly singled out,” said Rev. Jann Halloran, a member of We Believe Colorado. “We will continue to stand for our shared values against vague and misleading policies that encourage discrimination.”

Cash drain, profiling?

Opponents believe the ordinance will result in a drain on city resources and possible racial profiling.

I-100 adds the status of “illegal alien” to city code when it comes to impounding cars driven by unlicensed drivers. People caught without a license will need to post $2,500 bond in order to get their cars back. The bond is held for one year and is forfeited if the car is driven by an unlicensed driver within the year.

Lead proponent shocked it passed

Lead proponent Daniel Hayes said he was shocked to learn last night from a newspaper reporter that his initiative had garnered 54 percent of the vote. After all, he was up against opposition from the majority of the City Council, the mayor’s office and a coalition of community activists.

“I didn’t even turn on the news last night, I was watching the Olympics, I didn’t even want to know,” said the unincorporated Jefferson County resident.

Hayes views I-100 as more of a matter of safety than being an issue of cracking down on illegal immigration. He noted that four out of 10 drivers are unlicensed and driving without insurance.

Hayes does not buy the argument that the ordinance will be a financial burden to working and immigrant families.

“If they’re an immigrant and they’ve got a driver’s license, there’s nothing keeping them from driving,” he said. “But if it’s an illegal with no driver’s license and they get behind the wheel, then they’ll be susceptible to the law.”

Now they are thinking of taking it state wide.

Spanish athletes caught making slit-eyed gesture again.

World: Via The Guardian.

There was further embarrassment and shame for Spain's authorities to deal with yesterday after a second photograph was discovered showing a group of the country's Olympic athletes making offensive slit-eyed gestures.

In the image, which was found on the official website of the Spanish Tennis Federation, players and support staff from the country's Federation Cup Team are seen pulling their eyes back alongside the caption "Estamos preparados para China" - "We are prepared for China". It is thought to have been taken in April, prior to the team playing their Chinese counterparts in the semi-final of the competition - the leading team event for female tennis players.

Visible in the picture are Nuria Llagostera Vives, Anabel Medina Garrigues and Carla Suarez-Navarro, who are all currently competing in Beijing.

The discovery comes days after a photograph showing the Spanish Olympic basketball team making the same gestures emerged. It was part of an advert that appeared in Marca, Spain best-selling newspaper, and was meant to promote the country's involvement in the 2008 Games.

No offence is believed to have been intended by the photographs and, as yet, Olympic organisers have not issued a complaint in regard to either of them, but they are insensitive to say the least and only add to Spain's image as an intolerant nation, particularly when it comes to sport.

Man banned from girlfriend's home after noisy sex

Culture: This man is now set for life.

A British man has been banned from visiting his girlfriend's home after neighbors complained about noisy sex, a local government official said Thursday.

Adam Hinton, 32, was barred from getting within 100 meters (110 yards) of his 29-year-old girlfriend Kerry Norris' apartment by a British court Wednesday, Brighton and Hove City Council spokesman Mike Taggart said.

Residents of Norris's publicly-owned home had been complaining since 2006 about thumping music, banging headboards, and screamed obscenities, Taggart said. He added that a young child had been traumatized.

"There was a 6-year-old child who was subjected to the sort of obscenities you wouldn't want a 6-year-old to hear," Taggart said, adding that Norris also sunbathed naked in her yard in full view of passers-by.

"She is a classic nightmare neighbor," he said. "There's a salacious, smutty side to this case. But it's not about sex, it's about allowing your neighbors to have a normal decent life without being disturbed."

There is a Bernie Mac(RIP) skit in this article.

George Clooney denies texting or advising Obama.

Politics: A followup on this post. Why would anyone have to condemn this sort of politics? Clooney thinks way too highly of himself.

One of Mr Clooney's trusted acquaintances said: "George is a master at crafting his own image and he is helping Obama to hone his image both domestically and abroad," adding: "He has tried to keep the true extent of their involvement out of the Press because he is frightened of alienating voters."

But the Ocean's Eleven actor has issued a strong statement denying the claims.

It said: "I have never texted or emailed Senator Obama. And I'll offer a million dollars to anyone who could prove otherwise.

"In fact, I've only talked to the Senator once in the last year and a half....on the phone. I've spent more time with Senator McCain (he did my TV show) than I have with Senator Obama.

"I would hope that my friend John McCain would join me in condemning this kind of politics. Although I support Senator Obama I would never be dumb enough to offer policy advice to either candidate. They seem to be doing fine without me."

A spokesman for Barack Obama also denied the story.

Home Depot Required To Make Day Laborer Shelters

Bidness: Only in Los Angeles where the rights of day laborers get this sort of nonsense approved against all common sense.

Big-box, home-improvement stores in Los Angeles will have to set aside space for day laborers under an ordinance passed by the City Council on Wednesday.

When the ordinance takes effect -- the mayor has to sign it, and most city laws take effect 30 days afterward -- it will apply to stores such as The Home Depot that have 100,000 square feet or more, or any structure where 250,000 square feet or more of warehouse floor area is added.

The shelters must be easily accessible and include drinking water, bathrooms, tables, seating and trashcans. The stores may be required to work with Los Angeles police in developing a security plan, according to the unanimous vote by the 15-member lawmaking body.

People who live near Home Depot stores have complained of day laborers drinking beer, urinating in yards or other unseemly behavior.

The National Day Laborer Organizing Network, a nonprofit group started in Northridge in 2001, supports the new requirements.

"It provides for safe and dignified hiring locations where contingent workers can defend their basic rights. It carefully balances the interests of business, residents, day laborers and their employers," said the group's executive director, Pablo Alvarado.

Francisco Uribe, senior manager of government relations for The Home Depot, said the corporation does not oppose the day laborer centers.

"Although the complex challenges associated with the presence of day laborers are not specific to one industry nor one company, The Home Depot recognizes that some of our stores in the city of Los Angeles are impacted," Uribe said.

The city could have banned day laborers from hanging around the stores and bother area residents but again that is too much common sense. Watch this to appear in your area anywhere in the country

NYTIMES approves it!

It’s rare, in the parched landscape of the immigration debate, to come across policies that are simple, realistic and humane. But here is one: The Los Angeles City Council is expected to vote on Wednesday on an ordinance requiring big-box home-improvement stores to protect order and safety when day laborers gather in their parking lots looking for work.

... The ordinance is as much for Home Depot’s customers and neighbors as it is for laborers. Nobody likes parking-lot free-for-alls. And lawlessness goes down, not up, when a hiring site imposes order on the ad-hoc day-labor market.

The immigration system, as it is currently malfunctioning, creates lots of problems. Solutions tend to be hugely ambitious and unrealistic — like restrictionists’ calls to lock down a 2,000-mile border and deport millions. Los Angeles’s proposed ordinance to require more orderly hiring sites for day laborers is a small measure that makes a huge amount of sense. We hope the Council approves it.

Bullet-proof fashion comes to South Africa.

Africa: I wouldn't mind the flame thrower car myself.

A collection of bullet-proof clothing by Colombian designer Miguel Caballero has been launched in South Africa.

South African businessman Ari Ben David has opened a showroom for the fashion label and intends to open a shop.

He told the BBC he was drawn to the collection because of the "serious crime situation in South Africa".

Mr Caballero's clothes can withstand shots from 9mm pistols to AK-47s and clients fearing knives can pay extra for stab-proofing.

The clothing line features suits, suede and leather jackets, raincoats, shirts, vests and denim ware for both men and women.

South Africa is infamous for its high levels of violent crime.

Traditional names are 'dying out'

UK: Companion piece to Sweden a couple of posts below as ditzy parents in this day and age really put no effort in thinking of a child's name other than what they saw on TMZ.

The survey also suggests a royal connection has kept names such as Elizabeth, Philip and Charles consistently popular over the past 100 years.

It also found that some names which have lost popularity have been replaced by something similar, with Olivia replacing Olive as a popular name.

Sarah Stone, editor of Gurgle.com, said: "Not so long ago it seems we all knew a Great Uncle Harold or Aunty Irene, but sadly it seems these names could soon be lost forever.

"It is clear that modern parents are increasingly being influenced by fashions and celebrity. However we also need to remember that there are now more choices available."

The Office for National Statistics says the most popular baby names last year were Jack, Thomas and Oliver for boys and Grace, Ruby and Olivia for girls.

Crime-ridden Arkansas town expands 24-hour curfew

Crime: If your law enforcement people have to carry around military rifles as standard in one area and its not in the Middle East but America, drastic action must be taken.

Officers armed with military rifles have been stopping and questioning passers-by in a neighborhood plagued by violence that's been under a 24-hour curfew for a week.

On Tuesday, the Helena-West Helena City Council voted 9-0 to allow police to expand that program into any area of the city, despite a warning from a lawyer with the American Civil Liberties Union of Arkansas that the police stops were unconstitutional.

Police Chief Fred Fielder said the patrols have netted 32 arrests since they began last week in a 10-block neighborhood in this small town on the banks of the Mississippi River long troubled by poverty. The council said those living in the city want the random shootings and drug-fueled violence to stop, no matter what the cost.

"Now if somebody wants to sue us, they have an option to sue, but I'm fairly certain that a judge will see it the way the way the citizens see it here," Mayor James Valley said. "The citizens deserve peace, that some infringement on constitutional rights is OK and we have not violated anything as far as the Constitution."

The area under curfew, in what used to be a West Helena neighborhood, sits among abandoned homes and occupied residences in disrepair.

Among the curfew operation's arrests, 10 came from felony charges, including the arrest of two people carrying both drugs and weapons, Fielder said. The police chief said the officers in the field carry military-style M-16 or M-4 rifles, some equipped with laser sights. Other officers carry short-barrel shotguns. Many dealing crack cocaine and marijuana in the city carry pistols and AK-47 assault rifles, he said.

"We've had people call us, expressing concern for their children," Fielder said. "They had to sleep on the floor, because of stray bullets."

Fielder said officers had not arrested anyone for violating the curfew, only questioned people about why they were outside. Those without good answers or acting nervously get additional attention, Fielder said.

However, such stops likely violate residents' constitutional rights to freely assemble and protections against unreasonable police searches, said Holly Dickson, a lawyer for the ACLU of Arkansas who addressed the council at its packed Tuesday meeting. Because of that, Dickson said any convictions coming from the arrests likely would be overturned.

"The residents of these high-crime areas are already victims," she said. "They're victims of what are happening in the neighborhoods, they're victims of fear. But for them to be subject to unlawful stops and questioning ... that is not going to ultimately going to help this situation."

The council rejected Dickson's claims, at one point questioning the Little Rock-based attorney if she'd live in a neighborhood they described as under siege by wild gunfire and gangs.

"As far as I'm concerned, at 3 o'clock in the morning, nobody has any business being on the street, except the law," Councilman Eugene "Red" Johnson said. "Anyone out at 3 o'clock shouldn't be out on the street, unless you're going to the hospital."

It probably is unconstitutional but when its that bad you have to take measure and it doesn't include giving out grants and midnight basketball.

Obama man hugging Kwame Kilpatrick? Racist!

Politics: I asked below about how many white women are allowed in an Obama video now I see via Politico the restrictions have now expanded to you can't have black men in a video with Obama that is not postive to Black Jesus.

The Tennessee GOP, which has been at the forefront of attempts largely resisted by McCain and others in the party to inject issues related to race and patriotism into the campaign, has gone where no other official party has dared to venture: explicitly tying Barack Obama and the recently jailed mayor of Detroit, Kwame Kilpatrick.

In a new Web video, the state party features a clip of the two praising one another and embracing while listing Kilpatrick's legal and political woes on the screen.

Kilpatrick's problems could damage Obama in Michigan, especially in the white areas outside Detroit, but why is the Tennessee party the one airing this video?

Asked if they're really just trying to connect an allegedly corrupt big-city black politician to Obama, Tennessee GOP spokesman Bill Hobbs denied that was the case.

"We categorically reject the suggestion — the Web ad focuses on yet another example of Obama’s lousy character judgment, a growing list of examples that includes folks like the unrepentant terrorist William Ayers, the race-baiting Rev. Jeremiah Wright, the other race-baiting preacher, Father Phleger; and the corrupt real-estate wheeler-dealer, Tony Rezko," Hobbs said.

As for what the mayor Detroit has to do with the Tennessee state party, Hobbs said; "The mayor of Detroit has nothing to do with Tennessee. But Obama is running for president, which does of course have something to do with Tennessee."

First of all Jonathan Martin, "allegedly corrupt?" Have you not been following the news over the last 6 months?

Kilpatrick is the definitive example whenever he talks or by his actions of getting a Negro please shot back at him. He is the perfect combination of corruption, egomaniac and stupidity rolled into one that has somehow made Detroit even more of a joke and that is not easy. To say its racist at the drop of a hat is just more proof of paranoid delusions and looking for the racist angle. What happens when those Rev. Wright commercials start to appear in the fall? That racist too which means its out of bounds to use against Obama?

Lets get all the rules in place so everyone can know how to worship Black Jesus correctly because I have had it with this nonsense.

Adult Swedes now allowed to call themselves Metallica

Culture: or any other goofy names they want to give themselves or their kids to a point.

The Swedish National Tax Board (Skatteverket) has changed its guidelines as to what names are suitable for both adult Swedes and children born in Sweden.

The tax board holds a general registry of all people living in Sweden today. Up until now, it has forbidden name changes which veered beyond traditional naming conventions. For example it was difficult to call yourself Apple if you were a Swede.

But now it will be fine to change your name to Apple or for that matter, call your baby after anything else that derives from the plant world.

Lars Tegenfeldt, a legal expert at the tax board told The Local that adult people who wish to change their names may now judge for themselves whether the name might lead to any embarrassment.

The board continues to forbid taking on a name that is a swear word, describes genitalia or could offend others, although according to Tegenfeldt, this type of request is not common. Religious names such as Allah, Gud (God) and Fan (The Devil) are also taboo.

Parents may call their child after a company name, so long as it isn't potentially embarrassing or offensive for the child in future.

"It is OK to call your child Melitta, but not after Durex, the condom producers", Lars Tegenfeldt told The Local.

One common company name chosen by parents is 'Lego', he said.

Spain's basketball teams doesn't understand slant eyes gesture means racist.

EU: Its not that political correctness hasn't reached Spain the land of ape rights. But common sense and not being so myopic is needed in big doses.

The Spanish basketball team is in trouble over an advertisement showing the players from both the men's and the women's team using their fingers to make their eyes look more Chinese.

The pictures, which has been running as a newspaper spread in Spain since Friday, shows both sets of players making the gesture on a basketball court adorned with a Chinese dragon.

They were part of a publicity campaign for team sponsor Seur and is being used only in Spain.

Madonna to adopt another African baby.

Entertainment: Unfortunately no hilarious Oprah interview where the woman from Meeechigan tries an english accent that makes Kevin Costner in Robin Hood sound great.

The secret of eternal youth is no doubt at the top of Madonna's wish list for her 50th birthday celebrations on Saturday.

Yet in the absence of such a discovery, Guy Ritchie is planning the next best thing.

The Mail has learned that Ritchie has decided to bow to pressure from his domineering wife and finally agree to try to bring another baby into their lives.

Ritchie will pledge his full support for her dream to adopt another child - this time a little girl - when the family celebrate Madonna's half-century with a small gathering next weekend.

Malawian adoption minister Penstone Kilembe said: 'Madonna’s representatives have been visiting the girl. The adoption is now advanced - all the government is waiting for is Madonna to forward the petition of adoption formalities. Then Mercy will be able to leave the country for a new life.'

However, it has also emerged that some of Mercy's family have been against the adoption.

The girl’s grandmother Lucy Chekechiwa, 60, said she has been asked repeatedly by officials if Mercy could be adopted by an 'unidentified foreign family' — but was firmly against it.

Speaking from her village in Zomba District, Lucy said: 'We know that it is Mercy who Madonna really wants. We heard it is because my granddaughter is such a beautiful, happy child. Twice I have told the adoption people that I do not want Mercy to go outside the country. But they keep on at us.

'Now they say that Mercy will be leaving us, but can return at age 18. Yet I might not be alive then.'

I am now determined to adopt myself but instead a blue eyed blond Scandinavian kid. I thought the fad of adopting African babies like fricking show dogs was over but I guess not.

So how many white women can be in an Obama video?

Politics: I expect so much more from Jake Tapper than him falling for the if there is white women near Obama it must be racist meme.

How many young white women professing adoration for Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, can you count in this anti-Obama web video that the campaign of Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz, was sending out yesterday?

One...two...three...four...sure are a lot of young white women in this thing....

Why do you think they put so many young white women professing their love for Obama in what is clearly an anti-Obama video? What would possibly be negative about young white women liking Sen. Obama?

When asked, the McCain campaign says they took the video from local news packages, but of course that doesn't explain anything.

So if it was a multicultural collection of female goofiness it would have been alright or more black women than white or no white women at all?

Its not the color that is the main message but the sometimes airy knownothingness of what they are saying to the camera.

Seriously though...how many white women are allowed in an Obama video especially an anti-Obama clip? Lets gets some numbers going especially from the white liberals who are "outraged" and political pundits like Tapper.

90210 Would Be a ‘Step Backward’

Entertainment: Read this and take in the absolute fantasy that has been created here.
Ian Ziering is thrilled for his former Beverly Hills, 90210 castmates who have signed on for the CW’s spin-off series – but he’s equally thrilled not to be joining them.

“It’s not really where my career goals are focused right now,” Ziering, who played Steve Sanders on the runaway ’90s hit show, told PEOPLE Saturday at Boost Mobile’s BBQ at Project Beach House in Malibu. “I’m really looking down the line pretty far and this might be a step backwards.”

But that doesn’t mean the 44-year-old actor – who’s turned his attention to producing a MySpace TV series and will next act in National Lampoon’s 301: The Legend of Awesomest Maximus Wallace Leonidas later this month–is any less nostalgic for the years he spent playing Sanders.

“You know, Steve Sanders lives on in our hearts and in our minds,” says Ziering.

Ego and outright crazy is a helluva combination.

Sam the cooking guy back on the today show.

Entertainment: After Sam blew up at Kathie Lee and Hoda many thought he would never be back on the show. Well he did come back on August 8th but it was some lame skit on etiquette to try and make Kathie Lee and Hoda look better.

But what interests me is how fast the clip got around given the timeline.

I first heard the clip on WJFK's Mike O'Meara show and when I got home searched for clip and edited out the good part which got uploaded to youtube on Friday July 25th. I figured it would be of some interest and it got some views over the weekend. Then someone on Fark put a link to it on the following Monday which just blew it up from there. The next big link hitwise was from Slashfood and a whole host of other sites from Digg to Freerepublic with over 450,000 views to date.

It is interesting to see who is linking to the clip and what they have to say about it. But the speed which it went viral was amazing and now the NYTIMES kinda gives it the other bookend on how the venom from the comments were directed at Kathie Lee.

Late last month, Sam Zien, better known as Sam the Cooking Guy — a regular on the “Today” show on NBC — lost it.

“Can’t I talk?” he said in exasperation, after the hosts Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb interrupted his attempt to describe a salad preparation one too many times. “I watch this show every day. Everybody has issues with a lot of chatter back here, pay attention one minute.” That did the trick.

The scene, posted on YouTube, was heavily viewed and discussed. Most of the venom was reserved for Mrs. Gifford, who joined the fourth hour of “Today” four months ago and has been a lightning rod for ridicule ever since.

Ms. Kotb, by contrast, has been on the fourth hour of the show (10 to 11 a.m.) since it was introduced last September and generally draws praise from viewers, who seem to identify with her position as someone who is often cut off midsentence.

No real ending to this post other than its cool to be the source and not the subject of a youtube hit.

Hartford, CT becomes newest sanctuary city for illegal aliens.

Immigration: Celebration time for open border advocates.

The city council staked its ground Monday in the immigration debate, unanimously approving an ordinance that bars police from inquiring about immigration status.

The ordinance, if signed by Mayor Eddie Perez, would prevent police from arresting or detaining anyone solely because immigration authorities had issued an administrative warrant for them, which is a civil matter.

The ordinance also prohibits other city employees from asking anyone seeking services about their immigration status.

Councilman Pedro E. Segarra called the decision "bold and courageous" and said he was impressed by the dozens of people in the city who spoke in favor of the proposal at a public hearing last month. There was no opposition.

Segarra said he did not support illegal immigration, but had to respond to the needs of people living in the city. He said that opponents who contacted him since the proposal received media attention lived in the suburbs or as far away as Texas.

"My responsibility as a council person is to the residents of Hartford," he said. "I'm not responsible for securing our borders. I'm not responsible for issuing visas."

Safe to say Blake Aldridge is a bit of a dillweed?

Sports: Interesting story here about the UK diving pair with 14 year old Tom Daley and his partner Blake Aldridge(26 years old) I have to say that Blake who should be the more mature of the two sounds like a complete a-hole times 10.

The diving partner of teenage British sensation Tom Daley bitterly criticised him yesterday after they finished last in their Olympic final.

The 14-year-old is the subject of adulation in Beijing, where he has been dubbed 'Peking Tom' and 'Little Briton'.

But partner Blake Aldridge, 26, blamed him for costing them any chance of a medal, suggesting nerves got the better of him.

'And for me to be his partner, it was hard for me to get up there and ease him into his competition. Unfortunately, it's a partnership and you both have to be on top of your game. I was on top of my game but Tom was nowhere near the top of his game.

'I outdived Tom and that's not normally something that happens. It's because Tom had a lot more pressure on him than me.'

Aldridge, from Southampton, continued: 'At the end of the day Tom's 14 years old. He's done phenomenally. For me to be part of the partnership with him is a great thing. I knew we were capable of a medal, but I knew going into this tournament it would depend on how Tom performed.'

First off, you don't snidley remark about your partner in public like this and act like you came out great which by reports he did not but this next bit think Blake has no clue about being in competition.

At one point the dive pair seemed to be rowing after Tom objected to Aldridge gesturing to his mother in the crowd. 'I saw my mum in the audience and I asked her to give me a call,' said Aldridge.

'Tom said to me, "Why are you on the phone? We're in a competition - we've got another dive to do." Tom should not be worried about what I was doing. But he was worried about everyone and everything. That, to me, is the sole reason why he didn't perform.'

How come the 14 year old has better sense to see in the middle of a competiton you asking you mommy to call you on your cell which leads to the question why do you have your cell with you at this time in the middle of competition? It looks like the 14 year old got hooked up with an idiot.

Obama camp upset their supporters are portrayed as 'mindless.'

Politics: Truth in advertising hurts?

Barack Obama's campaign manager said Monday John McCain's now-famous Pairs Hilton/Britney Spears television ad wasn't just insulting to the Illinois senator, but to his campaign's legion of supporters as well.

And in an e-mail to those supporters Monday, campaign manager David Plouffe is hoping a backlash from that television spot will push Obama over the two million individual donor mark by the party's convention at the end of August — only six months after the campaign topped one million donors.

"While supporters like you are out knocking on doors, registering new voters, and organizing in your local communities, our opponents are not even trying to match your efforts. Instead, they're spending millions to spread the smear that Barack is just a 'celebrity' and that our grassroots movement is just a bunch of mindless fans," Plouffe wrote in the e-mail in what is one of his harshest assessments to date of McCain's 'Celebrity' ad.

and its bugging the hell out of Black Jesus.

In a presidential campaign freighted with war, recession and energy woes, a jibe featuring Paris Hilton, of all things, seems to have struck a nerve in Democrat Barack Obama.
For the second time in two weeks, he aired a TV ad Monday rebutting Republican John McCain's claim that Obama is little more than a celebrity, like the blonde hotel heiress.

The first time, Obama dismissed the assertion as "baloney." On Monday, Obama took a different tack with a commercial that says McCain, not he, is "Washington's biggest celebrity."

The back-and-forth may seem as frothy as a boardwalk milkshake in mid-August. But it suggests McCain is making some headway in trying to fight the campaign on his terms.

....In his new ad, Obama tries to turn the celebrity theme to his advantage, grafting it to his claim that a McCain presidency would amount to a third term for Bush. That claim has generated a defensive response from McCain.

McCain daily tries to beat back the idea that he'd represent a continuation of Bush, as he did Monday while campaigning in Erie and Harrisburg, Pa. Nearly 85 percent of Americans think the country is on the wrong track, McCain told workers at an Erie manufacturing facility, and "we've got to reform and reform and reform."

The new Obama ad shows McCain hugging Bush while the voiceover says, "as Washington embraced him, John McCain hugged right back."

Obama spokesman Bill Burton said the ad is designed to say voters have a choice between Obama, who stands for change, and McCain, "who overwhelmingly favors the status quo."

Holt, the GOP strategist, said, "If the celebrity issue were not hurting them, they would have ignored it."

Joss Stone to record song for Barack Obama

Politics: Yet another celeb honored by Black Jesus.

The British soul singer Joss Stone is recording a theme-song for Barack Obama’s presidential campaign.

Mr Obama is said to have approached the 21-year-old from Devon personally to ask her to write a one-off track, partly because he believes her music has cross-racial appeal.

Stone, who spends up to nine months a year in the US, was said to be “honoured” to have been asked and is now in a recording studio working on the song.

Alicia Keys and Jay-Z have also dedicated songs to Mr Obama in the lead up to his November election battle with the Republican senator John McCain.

Miss Stone is well-known in the US, where her third album, Introducing Joss Stone, debuted at number two in the Billboard album chart - the highest new entry by a British female artist in US chart history.

Chicago officials upset that immigration laws being observed.

Immigration: Another sanctuary city upset that ICE is doing its job.

Hispanics arrested on traffic and misdemeanor offenses in nearly 60 cases ended up being detained by the federal government on suspicion of entering the country illegally, despite city and county bans on helping Immigration agents, according to testimony Tuesday before a Chicago City Council committee.

In one case, a working man who was picked up for driving without a license has been jailed for five months, leaving his wife and two young sons to fend for themselves, the wife testified in Spanish.

"I know the law is the law," said Jorge Mujica, a community activist who translated for and spoke on behalf of the wife before the council's Human Relations Committee. "But I also know the person who goes to work and pays taxes and doesn't have a driver's license shouldn't stay in jail."

oh well then since you put it that way.

Section 8 Moves Poor to Suburbs, Tensions Follow .

Nation: This is the PC tamer version by the NYTIMES version of the Atlantic story on how Section 8 moves poor people to better areas bringing along crime/tension.

Under the Section 8 federal housing voucher program, thousands of poor, urban and often African-American residents have left hardscrabble neighborhoods in the nation’s largest cities and resettled in the suburbs.

Law enforcement experts and housing researchers argue that rising crime rates follow Section 8 recipients to their new homes, while other experts discount any direct link. But there is little doubt that cultural shock waves have followed the migration. Social and racial tensions between newcomers and their neighbors have increased, forcing suburban communities like Antioch to re-evaluate their civic identities along with their methods of dealing with the new residents.

The foreclosure crisis gnawing away at overbuilt suburbs has accelerated that migration, and the problems. Antioch is one of many suburbs in the midst of a full-blown mortgage meltdown that has seen property owners seeking out low-income renters to fill vacant homes. The most recent Contra Costa County records available show that from 2003 to 2005, the number of Section 8 households in Antioch grew by 50 percent, to about 1,500 from 1,000. Many new residents are African-American; Antioch’s black population has grown to about 20 percent, from 3 percent in 1990.

....While total crime in Antioch declined by 15 percent in the first three months of this year, compared to the same period in 2007, violent crime increased by about 16 percent, according to city statistics. Robberies and assaults accounted for most of that rise.

In an incident report filed with the Antioch Police Department, Natalie and Darin Rouse complained of constant problems with gang members’ blaring car stereos and under-age drinking on the street. In a written account, they blamed “gross community overdevelopment, affirmative action loopholes and incompetent state government management of federal affordable housing programs” for the problems.

Several white women, all professionals who attend the same church and have lived in Antioch for 12 years or more, recently sat outside a Starbucks coffee shop and discussed how their declining home equity had trapped them in a city they no longer recognize.

“My father got held up at gunpoint while he was renting a car to a young African-American man,” said Rebecca Gustafson, 35, who owns a graphics and Web design company with her husband. Ms. Gustafson said her car had also been broken into three times before being stolen from her driveway.

Laura Reynolds, 36, an emergency room nurse, said that she often came home to her Country Hills development tract after working a late-shift to find young black teenagers strolling through her neighborhood.
“I know it sounds horrible, but they’re scary. I’m sorry,” said Ms. Reynolds, who like her two friends said she was conflicted about her newfound fear of black youths. “Sometimes I question myself, and I think, Would I feel this way if they were Mexican or white?”

So the Times makes it into a racial issue instead of the fact taking poor people from one area plopping them into a better area where there is going to be cultural, societal, economical problems. The same problem would happen more or less with poor whites or Hispanics. Its not the color but the character and environment they are leaving to live in these new areas.

I said it before and you can call me bougie all you want but I steer away from places that clamor for section 8 checks. Its not worth the hassle in the long run especially if you can't leave in an slower economy to get away from the trouble.
