"12 Things The Negro Must Do For Himself "

Culture: Via Bookerrising which without Washington Post backing is a more informative site on black issues than TheRoot.com FYI. They point out the list by Nannie Helen Burroughs who was a follower of Booker T. Washington's philosophy of self-help called "12 Things The Negro Must Do For Himself ." Via BlackMenInAmerica.com:
12 Things The Negro Must Do For Himself by Nannie Helen Burroughs
(Circa Early 1900's)

1. The Negro Must Learn To Put First Things First. The First Things Are: Education; Development of Character Traits; A Trade and Home Ownership.

The Negro puts too much of his earning in clothes, in food, in show and in having what he calls "a good time." The Dr. Kelly Miller said, "The Negro buys what he WANTS and begs for what he Needs." Too true!

2. The Negro Must Stop Expecting God and White Folk To Do For Him What He Can Do For Himself.

It is the "Divine Plan" that the strong shall help the weak, but even God does not do for man what man can do for himself. The Negro will have to do exactly what Jesus told the man (in John 5:8) to do--Carry his own load--"Take up your bed and walk."

3. The Negro Must Keep Himself, His Children And His Home Clean And Make The Surroundings In Which He Lives Comfortable and Attractive.

He must learn to "run his community up"--not down. We can segregate by law, we integrate only by living. Civilization is not a matter of race, it is a matter of standards. Believe it or not--some day, some race is going to outdo the Anglo-Saxon, completely. It can be the Negro race, if the Negro gets sense enough. Civilization goes up and down that way.

4. The Negro Must Learn To Dress More Appropriately For Work And For Leisure.

Knowing what to wear--how to wear it--when to wear it and where to wear it, are earmarks of common sense, culture and also an index to character.

5. The Negro Must Make His Religion An Everyday Practice And Not Just A Sunday-Go-To-Meeting Emotional Affair.

6. The Negro Must Highly Resolve To Wipe Out Mass Ignorance.

The leaders of the race must teach and inspire the masses to become eager and determined to improve mentally, morally and spiritually, and to meet the basic requirements of good citizenship.

We should initiate an intensive literacy campaign in America, as well as in Africa. Ignorance--satisfied ignorance--is a millstone abut the neck of the race. It is democracy's greatest burden.

Social integration is a relationship attained as a result of the cultivation of kindred social ideals, interests and standards.

It is a blending process that requires time, understanding and kindred purposes to achieve. Likes alone and not laws can do it.

7. The Negro Must Stop Charging His Failures Up To His "Color" And To White People's Attitude.

The truth of the matter is that good service and conduct will make senseless race prejudice fade like mist before the rising sun.

God never intended that a man's color shall be anything other than a badge of distinction. It is high time that all races were learning that fact. The Negro must first QUALIFY for whatever position he wants. Purpose, initiative, ingenuity and industry are the keys that all men use to get what they want. The Negro will have to do the same. He must make himself a workman who is too skilled not to be wanted, and too DEPENDABLE not to be on the job, according to promise or plan. He will never become a vital factor in industry until he learns to put into his work the vitalizing force of initiative, skill and dependability. He has gone "RIGHTS" mad and "DUTY" dumb.

8. The Negro Must Overcome His Bad Job Habits.

He must make a brand new reputation for himself in the world of labor. His bad job habits are absenteeism, funerals to attend, or a little business to look after. The Negro runs an off and on business. He also has a bad reputation for conduct on the job--such as petty quarrelling with other help, incessant loud talking about nothing; loafing, carelessness, due to lack of job pride; insolence, gum chewing and--too often--liquor drinking. Just plain bad job habits!

9. He Must Improve His Conduct In Public Places.

Taken as a whole, he is entirely too loud and too ill-mannered.

There is much talk about wiping out racial segregation and also much talk about achieving integration.

Segregation is a physical arrangement by which people are separated in various services.

It is definitely up to the Negro to wipe out the apparent justification or excuse for segregation.

The only effective way to do it is to clean up and keep clean. By practice, cleanliness will become a habit and habit becomes character.

10. The Negro Must Learn How To Operate Business For People--Not For Negro People, Only.

To do business, he will have to remove all typical "earmarks," business principles; measure up to accepted standards and meet stimulating competition, graciously--in fact, he must learn to welcome competition.

11. The Average So-Called Educated Negro Will Have To Come Down Out Of The Air. He Is Too Inflated Over Nothing. He Needs An Experience Similar To The One That Ezekiel Had--(Ezekiel 3:14-19). And He Must Do What Ezekiel Did

Otherwise, through indifference, as to the plight of the masses, the Negro, who thinks that he has escaped, will lose his own soul. It will do all leaders good to read Hebrew 13:3, and the first Thirty-seven Chapters of Ezekiel.

A race transformation itself through its own leaders and its sensible "common people." A race rises on its own wings, or is held down by its own weight. True leaders are never "things apart from the people." They are the masses. They simply got to the front ahead of them. Their only business at the front is to inspire to masses by hard work and noble example and challenge them to "Come on!" Dante stated a fact when he said, "Show the people the light and they will find the way!"

There must arise within the Negro race a leadership that is not out hunting bargains for itself. A noble example is found in the men and women of the Negro race, who, in the early days, laid down their lives for the people. Their invaluable contributions have not been appraised by the "latter-day leaders." In many cases, their names would never be recorded, among the unsung heroes of the world, but for the fact that white friends have written them there.

"Lord, God of Hosts, Be with us yet."

The Negro of today does not realize that, but, for these exhibits A's, that certainly show the innate possibilities of members of their own race, white people would not have been moved to make such princely investments in lives and money, as they have made, for the establishment of schools and for the on-going of the race.

12. The Negro Must Stop Forgetting His Friends. "Remember."

Read Deuteronomy 24:18. Deuteronomy rings the big bell of gratitude. Why? Because an ingrate is an abomination in the sight of God. God is constantly telling us that "I the Lord thy God delivered you"--through human instrumentalities.

The American Negro has had and still has friends--in the North and in the South. These friends not only pray, speak, write, influence others, but make unbelievable, unpublished sacrifices and contributions for the advancement of the race--for their brothers in bonds.

The noblest thing that the Negro can do is to so live and labor that these benefactors will not have given in vain. The Negro must make his heart warm with gratitude, his lips sweet with thanks and his heart and mind resolute with purpose to justify the sacrifices and stand on his feet and go forward--"God is no respector of persons. In every nation, he that feareth him and worketh righteousness is" sure to win out. Get to work! That's the answer to everything that hurts us. We talk too much about nothing instead of redeeming the time by working.

R-E-M-E-M-B-E-R

In spite of race prejudice, America is brim full of opportunities. Go after them!

The sad part is that any one of these 12 rules are applicable to not only certain segments of the black community but the nation as a whole. To have to still dealing with these problems now is a damn shame.

(AP) If Obama loses, only racism to blame.

Politics: This is the endgame if Obama loses as this article will be referenced over and over again.

Deep-seated racial misgivings could cost Barack Obama the White House if the election is close, according to an AP-Yahoo News poll that found one-third of white Democrats harbor negative views toward blacks — many calling them "lazy," "violent," responsible for their own troubles.

The poll, conducted with Stanford University, suggests that the percentage of voters who may turn away from Obama because of his race could easily be larger than the final difference between the candidates in 2004 — about two and one-half percentage points.

Certainly, Republican John McCain has his own obstacles: He's an ally of an unpopular president and would be the nation's oldest first-term president. But Obama faces this: 40 percent of all white Americans hold at least a partly negative view toward blacks, and that includes many Democrats and independents.

But this is the best part as they want to push the racist meme.

The findings suggest that Obama's problem is close to home — among his fellow Democrats, particularly non-Hispanic white voters. Just seven in 10 people who call themselves Democrats support Obama, compared to the 85 percent of self-identified Republicans who back McCain.

The survey also focused on the racial attitudes of independent voters because they are likely to decide the election.

Lots of Republicans harbor prejudices, too, but the survey found they weren't voting against Obama because of his race. Most Republicans wouldn't vote for any Democrat for president — white, black or brown.

Not all whites are prejudiced. Indeed, more whites say good things about blacks than say bad things, the poll shows. And many whites who see blacks in a negative light are still willing or even eager to vote for Obama.

On the other side of the racial question, the Illinois Democrat is drawing almost unanimous support from blacks, the poll shows, though that probably wouldn't be enough to counter the negative effect of some whites' views.

Race is not the biggest factor driving Democrats and independents away from Obama. Doubts about his competency loom even larger, the poll indicates. More than a quarter of all Democrats expressed doubt that Obama can bring about the change they want, and they are likely to vote against him because of that.

Three in 10 of those Democrats who don't trust Obama's change-making credentials say they plan to vote for McCain.

Still, the effects of whites' racial views are apparent in the polling.

So the bigger story is among Dems there are questions about Obama's competency and his ability to being change, but lets focus on the racist part because it makes a better story. Nice.

Obama campaign pushes voter fraud in Virginia.

Politics: This is ridiculous.

Norfolk election officials on Friday reluctantly loosened procedures for registering college students to vote after protests from presidential candidate Barack Obama's campaign and an admonishment from state election officials.

The Illinois senator's campaign complained that the Norfolk registrar's policy of sending a questionnaire to anyone applying to register from a college campus discouraged students from following through. The State Board of Elections asked general registrar Elisa J. Long to halt the practice.

The Norfolk Electoral Board agreed to that but said in a statement: "This compliance is with the understanding that the Board strongly feels that by doing so, we are out of compliance with Virginia Election Laws."

Kevin Griffis, a spokesman for Obama's campaign in Virginia, said Norfolk's practice was "completely ridiculous" and had "a chilling effect on voter registration on campuses."

Obama's campaign has been aggressively registering students in Virginia, viewed as a battleground state. Griffis said Obama "is energizing young voters in a way that's not happened in a generation or more."

Of Virginia's 49,000 new registrations in August, 43 percent were age 23 and under, he said.

State law requires registrars to decide eligibility based on two components of residence: place of abode and domicile. Long said the questionnaire had been used to determine domicile and was based on suggested questions from the state elections office. Abode is address.

If you are a college student and you can't follow up on a simple questionnaire, you shouldn't be allowed to have children much less vote. This is the Obama camp trying to game the system that could allow the students to vote twice in their home state/hometown and in Norfolk. I wonder how many other places they are pulling this stunt.

Mary Alana Welch, a 21-year-old student at Old Dominion University, received one of the questionnaires.

"It was a big deterrent," she said. "It gave me the impression I wasn't supposed to be registering here."

She said she never returned it and is still figuring out how to change her registration from Northern Virginia to Norfolk.

To cast her first vote, she wants to go to the polls instead of sending in an absentee ballot.

Long and the Norfolk Electoral Board are urging that the General Assembly clarify the student voter registration policy.

The American Civil Liberties Union of Virginia agrees.

"College students are in a unique situation.... They live in two places," the organization's executive director, Kent Willis, said. "The state law does not address that properly."

"If homeless people have the right to vote by choosing their principal residence, college students ought to have the same right."

Long said she's now reviewing an application from a student from Savannah, Ga., who pays out-of-state tuition, is declared as a dependent in Georgia and has a Georgia driver's license and car registration.

"What automatically makes these out-of-state students Virginians?" she asked.

The Norfolk Electoral Board statement reads: "Although the revised policy guidelines places the burden of proof of residence with the person asserting it, the policy allows students to claim residence in Virginia unchallenged."

Spain paying jobless illegals/immigrants to get out.

Spain: Unlike most people, I do take pleasure in saying I told you so especially about Spain who boasted about their amnesty programs and "diversity." That quickly went south with the highest unemployment rate in the EU.

Spain will pay jobless immigrants to go home under a decree approved Friday, more evidence of how its once-booming economy has quickly gone bust.

Labor Minister Celestino Corbacho said the Cabinet approved the measure under a fast-track procedure and it will take effect in about a month.

The plan targets tens of thousands of non-European Union citizens who have been laid off in Spain and are entitled to unemployment benefits. It offers them a lump sum payment of 40 percent of that money once they renounce their work and residency permits, and the rest once they get home.

The voluntary program applies to people from 19 non-EU countries with which Spain has signed bilateral accords under which social security benefits accrued in one nation can be paid in the other.

Those who sign up for it must agree not to return to Spain for three years, with the promise they will be able to recover their work and residency permits after that.

Spain is grappling with ever-swelling jobless ranks in an economy that had posted more than a decade of solid growth but is now flirting with recession. Unemployment is now an EU-high of 10.7 percent, according to the bloc's statistical agency.

Muslim workers fired from Nebraska Swift plant; Cubans to replace?

Culture: Previous posts dating back to the Colorado Swift Muslim disputes here. The ongoing saga takes an interesting turn.

GRAND ISLAND, Neb. - Nearly 90 Muslims are no longer working at the JBS Swift & Co. meatpacking plant here.

Dan Hoppes, president of the United Food and Commercial Workers Union Local No. 22, said Friday that about 50 to 80 Muslims had quit the night before. He said the matter stemmed from the recent debate over break time for prayer during the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.

JBS Swift confirmed 86 firings to the Associated Press late Friday, saying the employees were terminated earlier in the day for repeatedly leaving work without authorization.

Police said there had been a loud disagreement Thursday night in the plant cafeteria.

"There were some Muslim people who wanted to get the rest of the people to back them (by) moving their (dinner) break to an earlier time," Hoppes said, "and when that did not happen, the rest of the people went back to work, and those people protesting got loud and boisterous. It wasn't a physical altercation at all."

But fears mounted that it might get physical, so the police were called to the Swift plant about 9 p.m. Thursday.

"By the time the police got there, it was settled down, and several of them went ahead and quit or left the plant," Hoppes said. "They were told (to) either go back to work or leave.

"Some of them chose to leave - to quit," Hoppes said.

The workers who left worked the second shift, or B shift - the evening shift that typically works from 3 p.m. to 11:30 p.m.

Earlier Friday, a Somali-American leader in Omaha had said a much higher number of Muslims no longer worked at the plant.

Mohamed Rage with the Omaha Somali-American Community Organization told the Associated Press that 80 workers were thrown out after Thursday night's altercation. When they tried to return for their shift Friday, he said, they were fired, along with 70 others.

Now the role of a migrant recruiter comes to the front as Cuban families are moving in to take the Somali Muslims place.

"...But with some employees quitting because of this week's protests and counterprotests over the issue of how -- or whether -- break times at JBS Swift should be altered, the company is bringing a new ethnic group to Grand Island.

Kris Burling, director of English language learners for the Grand Island public schools, said GIPS migrant recruiter Suyapa Gonzalez was told by her contact person at Swift that Cuban families would soon be arriving in Grand Island.

Burling said Gonzalez was told a few Cuban fathers have already arrived in Grand Island in advance of their families but have not started working at Swift. Gonzalez also was told that perhaps eight to 10 families would be arriving in town this week.

She said Gonzalez also was told that a total of 25 to 30 families may eventually settle in Grand Island.

Burling said schools officials have been informed that the Cuban families have been living in Miami.

School officials do not know how many children those families will bring to Grand Island, Burling said."

Democrats threaten Jewish groups over Palin.

Politics: Another day and another example of Dem thuggery.

Sources tell CBS 2 HD that a decision to disinvite Palin from the high profile rally after Clinton pulled out in a huff came as the result of intense pressure from Democrats.

"This is insulting. This is embarrassing, especially to Gov. Palin, to me and I think it should be to every single New Yorker," Assemblyman Dov Hikind, D-Brooklyn, told CBS 2 HD.

Sources say the axes were out for Palin as soon as Sen. Clinton pulled out because she did not want to attend the same event as the Republican vice presidential candidate.

"I have never seen such raw emotion -- on both sides," said someone close to the situation.

The groups sponsoring the rally against Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad speaking at the UN were reportedly told, "it could jeopardize their tax exempt status" if they had Palin and not Clinton or Democratic VP candidate Joe Biden on hand.

So all politicians were disinvited, most prominently, Palin.

"It's an absolute shame that this has happened," Hikind said. "To threaten organizations … to threaten the Conference of Presidents that if you don't withdraw the invitation to Gov. Palin we're going to look into your tax exempt status … that's McCarthyism."

Another Jewish group tried to step into the breach by inviting Palin to a different protest a day earlier.

"I'm absolutely appalled at the behavior of the Democrats," said Bob Kunst of Defenders.net. "I'm a Democrat and for the first time in my life I'm going to vote Republican. I can't take it anymore."

Broward Democrats using prayer to mock Sarah Palin

Politics: Democrats take even the solemn act of prayer as a joke.

At the Broward Democratic Party's monthly meeting Tuesday night, it started right at the beginning — with the invocation, delivered by Mike Moskowitz, the state committeeman for the county.

He called for a "blessing on the elk and moose in Alaska who have been decimated by Sarah Barracuda" and included a prayer that Palin doesn't turn her sights on the squirrels in Washington, D.C.

"We pray that her journey takes her across the bridge to nowhere," he said.

Monroe Kiar, the former Davie town attorney and father of state Rep. Martin Kiar, D-Davie, told the party gathering about his summer visit to Alaska.

Finding himself in Juneau, he said he visited the Capitol, while everyone else in the group went whale watching — a true mark of a political junkie.

The Capitol building was smaller than just about anything in Broward, he said. Palin is governor of a state of about 670,000 residents.

"That's disgraceful running for vice president," Kiar said. "Any one of our commissioners is more qualified to be vice president than she is."

Mitch Ceasar, the Broward Democratic chairman, also belittled Palin's level of experience.

Noting she previously served as mayor of Wasilla, Alaska, he said that was nothing compared to the size of communities in Broward.

"She was elected mayor of one half of a [Broward] condo," Ceasar said. "And when she was elected governor of Alaska, she was elected [as the equivalent of] a Broward County commissioner."

I want to make something clear as a South Florida resident. There is no one in the position of a government official especially in the role of a Broward commissioner who is qualified to run for anything else other than a Broward County Commissioner.

Combine them with Miami-Dade County officials and you maybe find one who would be qualified to turn on a light switch.

Obama and Raines in an ad? Thats Racist!

Media: If nothing else finally reaching the point where a newspaper has to fact check itself is highly amusing.

But again we see the liberals in the press teaching code words because having two black men with one old white woman in an ad first before the Obama/Johnson ad came out is racist according to the Time's Karen Tumulty.

Its the same damn defense that happened with Obama/Kilpatrick. According to liberals, two black men in an ad is racist.

2nd Swift plant reverses Muslim prayer policy, "riot" breaks out

Culture: Latest update as another Swift Plant kills off the prayer policy for Muslims celebrating Ramadan which gave them prayer time but made everyone else angry over the favoritism.

GRAND ISLAND — Day four of strikes at the JBS Swift & Co. meatpacking plant in Grand Island opened with a majority of A-shift workers (6 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.) walking off the job Thursday in a continued counterprotest -- and ended with police called to a reported riot in the Swift cafeteria.

Reports Thursday night from workers at the scene indicated that a fight broke out between about 20 to 30 Somalian and Hispanic workers, but that the scuffle was under control in less than half an hour. A police team was called to Swift about 9 p.m. and entered the building. Shortly after, a group of Somalian workers were seen exiting Swift from north side doors and heading toward the parking lots.

There were no immediate reports of injuries and no formal comment from either police or corporate officials.

The Thursday morning walk-out had contributed to what was a 1,000-employee walkout over two shifts that completely closed the Swift plant Wednesday night. The strikes ultimately led to the recanting Thursday of a compromise reached two days earlier with Somalian workers who went on strike to gain prayer time during the holy month of Ramadan.

"It was a compromise that people thought would work for everyone -- it didn't," said Dan Hoppes, president of the United Food and Commercial Workers Local No. 22. "Everything will go back to the way it was."

Hoppes said he and Swift officials met late Thursday morning with the nearly 500 Muslim workers who on Tuesday reached a compromise to take their dinner break at 7:45 p.m. -- 15 minutes earlier than normal -- in order to conduct a sunset prayer.

"We believe they're going to come back to work, but we don't know," Hoppes said, noting that reverting back to an 8 p.m. dinner time does not accommodate the fasting that the Somalians are under until the end of Ramadan on Oct. 1.

A call to Swift officials was not returned.

After days of this going on here comes the understatment of this fiasco.

"I don't know what happened," Hoppes said. "I think we have problems between races.”

Massive traffic cam scandal in Italy.

World: I have yet to be convinced that traffic cams are anything but revenue generators.

Investigators have uncovered an ingenious, nationwide con in which the time between traffic lights turning from amber to red was reduced to almost nothing, so that thousands of motorists were unfairly fined for running a red light.

Normal traffic lights give drivers a few seconds lee-way to come to a stop, or to speed up through a junction while the light is still on amber.

The doctored lights went from yellow to red in the blink of an eye, catching out thousands of unsuspecting motorists.

The wrongful fines, which could amount to as much as £5 million, were allegedly pocketed by corrupt local officials.

Following a six month investigation, four contractors have been arrested, including an executive from the firm which made the T-Red traffic beacons and the director of the company which distributed them.

Italian police are investigating officials in around 30 towns scattered across the country, from Venice and Verona to Sardinia, who they believe collaborated in the elaborate sting. Further arrests are expected.

Drivers who believe they may have been wrongly caught out running a red light are expected to demand that their fines be rescinded.

A consumer group, Codacons, said it would act on behalf of motorists who were fraudulently fined.

Zimbabwe's power sharing already falls apart.

Africa: I gave it months before they tore the whole thing apart and it seems to have taken only days.

The first attempt by the three partners in Zimbabwe’s new power-sharing government to launch its new administration and confront the country’s disastrous state fell at the first hurdle last night when they failed to agree on the sharing of the ministries.

“Zanu(PF) is claiming all the powerful ministries,” said Nelson Chamisa, spokesman for Morgan Tsvangirai’s Movement for Democratic Change, after Mr Mugabe, Mr Tsvangirai and Arthur Mutambara, leader of the smaller faction of the MDC, broke up after about six hours of negotiations.

MDC sources said Mr Mugabe was insisting on the ministries of defence and home affairs – which includes the police, finance and local government.

Mr Mugabe’s new demands came after he addressed his party’s politburo and central committee. At the meeting on Wednesday, Mr Mugabe declared: “We remain in the driving seat. We will not tolerate any nonsense from our new partners.”

Mugabe doesn't really grasp the whole concept of power sharing.

'Moroccan Secret Service Recruits Dutch MPs'

Politics: Hot spy action.

MPs and local council members of Moroccan origin are routinely approached by the Moroccan secret service to defend the interests of Morocco. So says Fouad el Haji, a Labour (PvdA) council member in Rotterdam. The Lower House is shocked and has demanded an explanation from the cabinet.

El Haji said on n TV programme Pauw&Witteman that Moroccan-Dutch MPs, local politicians, entrepreneurs and police officers are enticed by the Moroccan secret service to serve the interests of Morocco. Rabat wants to bind them to it financially, culturally and politically, he stated.

El Haji suggested that within the PvdA, Socialist Party (SP) and leftwing Greens (GroenLinks), there are polticians who have taken up the offer and thus work for the secret service. He suggested one or several MPs or ex-MPs are among them. But he declined to name any names.

El Haji said he himself was also approached. "It is a pattern," he explained. "You are invited to gala parties and treated with all attentions. Before you know it, you are on a plane to Morocco. When you visit Morocco, you are even more cosseted."

'Ordinary' Moroccans are also targeted, El Haji continued. For example, they are urged to use their savings to buy a second house in Morocco. The integration process is thereby deliberately frustrated, according to El Haji.

This week, TV programme NOVA revealed that a Rotterdam policeman, Re Lemhaouli, was a spy for the Moroccan secret service. This was discovered last spring, but hushed up by the Dutch authorities, according to NOVA. Now that the case has come out in the open, the criminal investigation service has launched an investigation after all.

Dementia sufferers may have a 'duty to die'

UK: Once you make the value of life sorta up for grabs depending on the situation(abortion, terminally ill, depression...etc.) Then it only becomes a matter of when you keep expanding the list. Also universal health care seems to have it limits based on resources rather than your actual health.

Lady Warnock, a former headmistress who went on to become Britain's leading moral philosopher, chaired a landmark Government committee in the 1980s that established the law on fertility treatment and embryo research.

A prominent supporter of euthanasia, she has previously suggested that pensioners who do not want to become a burden on their carers should be helped to die.

Last year the Mental Capacity Act came into effect that gives legal force to "living wills", so patients can appoint an "attorney" to tell doctors when their hospital food and water should be removed.

But in her latest interview, given to the Church of Scotland's magazine Life and Work, Lady Warnock goes further by claiming that dementia sufferers should consider ending their lives through euthanasia because of the strain they put on their families and public services.

Recent figures show there are 700,000 people with degenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's in Britain. By 2026 experts predict there will be one million dementia sufferers in the country, costing the NHS an estimated £35billion a year.

Lady Warnock said: "If you're demented, you're wasting people's lives – your family's lives – and you're wasting the resources of the National Health Service.

"I'm absolutely, fully in agreement with the argument that if pain is insufferable, then someone should be given help to die, but I feel there's a wider argument that if somebody absolutely, desperately wants to die because they're a burden to their family, or the state, then I think they too should be allowed to die.

"Actually I've just written an article called 'A Duty to Die?' for a Norwegian periodical. I wrote it really suggesting that there's nothing wrong with feeling you ought to do so for the sake of others as well as yourself."

She went on: "If you've an advance directive, appointing someone else to act on your behalf, if you become incapacitated, then I think there is a hope that your advocate may say that you would not wish to live in this condition so please try to help her die.

"I think that's the way the future will go, putting it rather brutally, you'd be licensing people to put others down."

Yes, McCain did look down on Zapatero

Politics: I personally loved he slightly dismissed the terrorist appeasing amnesty giving socialist douche. Unlike people screaming McCain got confused, this timeline by the Voice blog shows he knew what he was doing.

"...Zapatero is a center-left politician, but McCain has suggested that as president he would seek to repair relations that have been badly frayed in Europe during Bush's tenure. In an early-April interview with a reporter from Spanish newspaper El Pais, McCain said, "This is the moment to leave behind discrepancies with Spain."

"...So, was McCain purposely trying to diss the Spanish leader? Questions about whether McCain forgot which country Zapatero leads, got confused about Spain's geographic relationship to Latin America, or confused Zapatero with the Zapatista rebels from Mexico have exploded on blogs since reports of the interview first surfaced.

McCain foreign policy adviser Randy Sheunemann said McCain's answer was intentional.

"The questioner asked several times about Senator McCain's willingness to meet Zapatero (and id'd him in the question so there is no doubt Senator McCain knew exactly to whom the question referred). Senator McCain refused to commit to a White House meeting with President Zapatero in this interview," he said in an e-mail."

"....Yoly Cuello, the reporter who interviewed McCain, said she repeatedly asked McCain about Spain because "he didn't want to answer my question."

"I think he was just trying not to answer the question, I think he understood" who Zaptero is and where he's from, Cuello said. She conducted the phone interview on Tuesday when McCain was campaigning in Miami and it aired Wednesday on Union Radio's 74 Spanish-language radio affiliates nationwide and on its stations in Colombia, Mexico and Spain. Workers protest Swift compromise with Muslim prayer, Ramadan.

Business: Another Swift plant with Somalia Muslims in Nebraska gives in to prayer requests which then makes the majority of workers angry they are losing hours.

A compromise reached to accommodate prayer for about 500 Somalian meatpacking plant workers in Grand Island led to a counter protest of even more workers at the JBS Swift & Co. plant Wednesday.

Workers including Caucasians, Hispanics, Vietnamese, and African-Americans walked out after clocking in on the B shift shortly after 3 p.m.

The objection -- a change in the break schedule that leaves B shift workers shorted of hours Monday through Friday and forces them to work Saturday to earn at least 40 hours of pay.

"The Somalians say they can only work three hours after sunset, so we're supposed to work 7.3 hours a day Monday through Friday," said Naomi Jakubowski. "We're supposed to come in and make up the time on Saturday or be shorted at just 36 hours."

"I don't want to sacrifice my Saturdays with my kids -- and I can't raise 'em on 36 hours of pay," she said. "I've got rent, food and diapers to buy."

Dan Hoppes, president of the United Food and Commercial Workers Local No. 22, announced the compromise Wednesday morning.

He said the half-hour evening supper break on B shift will begin at 7:45 p.m. instead of 8 p.m. starting Wednesday and continue until the end of Ramadan on Oct. 1. The supper break will be taken en masse, he said.

The change was reached Tuesday night after negotiations between two local Swift officials, five designated Muslim leaders and three representatives of the UFCW, which represents 2,500 Swift workers, 500 of whom are Muslim.

"This will give them time to pray and satisfy their faith," Hoppes said.

But the B shift workers counterprotesting Wednesday said besides a change in the dinner break schedule, the standard 15-minute break during the 6 o'clock hour of B shift was broken into three 5-minute-long breaks to accommodate the Somalian prayer time.

Bernadino Orellana said the Hispanic workers have staffed the Swift plant for 20 to 30 years. The Somalian workers have come in the last year and changed everything -- Swift management has given in to the minority, she said.

"Nobody should have special privileges," shouted B shift protester Tina Ramirez. "Treat everybody fairly."

Counterprotesters raised objections Wednesday to a pay raise they say the Somalians were given and were bragging about Tuesday and Wednesday.

Yeah, this deal was well thought out. Just like in Greeley Swift Plant where the majority of workers there got angry, the company caved in and now has a bigger problem on their hands.

Wash Post finally gets to correct Palin/ Al Qaeda nonsense.

Politics: Of course the writer of the article Anne E. Kornblut knew exactly what she was doing in the first place, now a couple of days pass, put in the "clarification."

CLARIFICATION: A Sept. 12 Page One article quoted Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin as telling a brigade of Iraq-bound soldiers that they would “defend the innocent from the enemies who planned and carried out and rejoiced in the death of thousands of Americans.” The report linked Palin’s comments with the idea that Saddam Hussein was connected to the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks. Tracey Schmitt, a spokeswoman for the McCain-Palin campaign, said Palin was referring to al-Qaeda in Iraq, a terror group that formed after the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq in 2003 and claims to be allied with the global al-Qaeda organization.

This is the sort of thing that makes me happy watching newspaper industry go into freefall. They don't deserve any respect.

John McCain's speeches show signs of clinical depression

Politics: Here comes the next nutter meme.

Using ever more sophisticated software and mathematical algorithms, scientists are increasingly able to pick apart political speeches.

They analyse language, pitch, tone and facial expressions to get a clue as to whether politicians are being sincere.

To prove the point David Skillicorn, a mathematics and computer science researcher at Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario, Canada, analysed the speeches of John McCain, Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, during the election race.

His findings published in the New Scientist concluded that even though the candidates receive training and have their speeches written for them, personal traits still shine through.

While each of the 150 speeches studied varied no matter who was delivering them, Mr Obama's speeches contained considerably higher spin than either Mr McCain or Mrs Clinton.

Mr McCain used the least spin but his "straight talk" made speeches fall flat and even showed signs of someone with clinical depression.

His voice changes little in pitch as he speaks, and so conveys very little emotion or impact, it was said. Clinton on the other hand was more neutral than the other two candidates.

Now you know the program is a bust if Hillary is considered more neutral.

Josh Howard with another "Negro.. please" moment

Culture: Sigh. You just can't teach fools common sense or decency.

The battered reputation of Josh Howard took another hit this week when an online video surfaced showing the Dallas Mavericks forward disrespecting the national anthem.

In a video posted on YouTube, Howard is shown on a football field at a charity flag football game. As the national anthem plays in the background, Howard approaches a camera and says: "'The Star Spangled Banner' is going on right now. I don't even celebrate that (expletive). I'm black."

Howard's agent, Jeff Schwartz, did not immediately return a phone call seeking comment. Donnie Nelson, the Mavericks' president of basketball operations, directed questions to team owner Mark Cuban, who in an e-mail declined to comment.

The incident is the latest off-court problem for Howard, a fifth-year pro from Wake Forest who averaged 19.9 points and seven rebounds last season. He was arrested in July when police said he was drag racing at 94 mph in a 55 zone. A court appearance was scheduled for next week.

Howard was criticized last season for saying in a radio interview during a first-round playoff series against New Orleans that he occasionally smokes marijuana. Later that same series, he angered coach Avery Johnson by throwing himself a birthday bash after a Game 4 loss to the Hornets.

9th Circuit Appeals court upholds Arizona immigration law

Immigration: The 9th Circuit upheld an anti-illegal immigration law? I am feeling dizzy.

A federal appeals court on Wednesday upheld an Arizona law that penalizes businesses that knowingly hire illegal immigrants and requires them to verify the employment status of their workers.

The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals decision rejected a challenge by business and civil-rights groups that contend the law infringes on federal immigration powers.

The law, intended to lessen the economic incentive for immigrants to sneak into the country, imposes civil penalties on employers by suspending or revoking their business licenses when they are found to have knowingly hired illegal immigrants.

While it upheld the law, a three-judge panel of the court left the door open for other challenges, saying no one has been accused of violating the law since it took effect nine months ago.

Republican state Rep. Russell Pearce of Mesa, the author of the law, said the ruling is a big win for the movement to get state and local governments to crack down on illegal immigration.

"Locals are just as responsible for the crisis in America in this invasion (of illegal immigrants) as the federal government," Pearce said.

The civil-rights groups that challenged the law are considering whether to appeal the ruling to the 9th Circuit or the U.S. Supreme Court.

Jonathan Weissglass, an attorney for the groups, said the law and the ruling could create problems for employers who have operations in more than one state because states could have different sets of hiring rules.

"What the 9th Circuit has allowed is everyone can enact its own laws regarding immigrant employment, which would create chaos," Weissglass said.

House votes to ease D.C. gun restrictions

Gun Rights: Looks like the blue dog Dems showing a little muscle. But this is just show since I doubt the Senate will have a go at it.

The pro-gun majority in the House moved Wednesday to compel the nation's capital to broaden the rights of its residents to buy and own firearms, including semiautomatic weapons.
Critics, led by the District of Columbia's sole delegate to Congress, decried the action. They said the vote tramples on the district's right to govern itself and could endanger both residents and political dignitaries who often travel across the city.

But the National Rifle Association-backed bill passed easily, 266-152, with supporters saying they were determined to give D.C. residents the same Second Amendment right of self-defense that has been available to other Americans.

Many of those speaking for the bill in debate that extended well into the night Tuesday were conservative Democrats from rural districts who strongly support gun rights. Eighty-five Democrats voted for the bill.

"Number one, I'm a pro-gun Democrat," said Rep. Mike Ross, D-Ark. "Number 2, if the government of the District of Columbia can take your guns away from you in our nation's capital, Prescott, Arkansas, and many other small towns across the country could be next."

Western influence declines at the UN pushing human rights agenda.

World: Thanks to the EU who is so busy being self-righteous at America and pushing their "soft power" that they got outflanked by China and Russia.

A sea change in the balance of power in favour of China, India, Russia and other emerging states is wrecking European and US efforts to entrench human rights, liberties and multilateralism. Western policies in crisis regions as diverse as Georgia, Zimbabwe, Burma or the Balkans are suffering serial defeats in what the study identifies as a protracted trend.

The haemorrhaging of western power, as reflected in longer-term voting patterns in key UN bodies, is mirrored by the increasing clout of China, Russia and the Islamic world, according to an audit of European influence at the UN by the European Council on Foreign Relations.

"The EU is suffering a slow-motion crisis at the UN," says the report, noting that the west is now being regularly outwitted in global diplomatic poker by the Chinese and Russians. "The problem is fading power to set the rules. The UN is increasingly being shaped by China, Russia and their allies ... The west is in disarray. The EU's rifts with the US on many human rights issues at the UN in the Bush era have weakened both."

As usual it is Bush's fault but the blame lies with the EU for being such a collection of wimps that Russia/China and now the Islamic world knows they are push overs. The whole Mohammed cartoon debacle is just an example.

Using a programme designed to analyse voting patterns and statistics, the thinktank found that European policies on human rights enjoyed the support of 72% of UN members a decade ago but only 48% by last year, while the US suffered a steeper collapse from 77% to 30%.

"The pattern of votes in the general assembly shows that opposition to the EU is growing, spurred by a common resistance to European efforts at promoting human rights," said the study.

The beneficiaries of this disaffection with the west have been China and Russia, which defend national sovereignty and non-intervention in sovereign countries no matter how grievous the atrocities and human rights violations blamed on national governments. Over the past decade support for Chinese and Russian stances on human rights issues has soared from less than 50% to 74% in the UN general assembly.

The assembly kicked off this week in New York with the west bracing itself for another debacle. Serbia is to use the session to demand a vote on the "illegality" of the secession last February of Kosovo, whose breakaway was strongly backed by the US and most of the EU, and to refer the dispute to the UN's international court of justice. Despite strenuous lobbying by the Europeans to prevent the vote, they have conceded defeat. Only 46 of the 192 UN states have recognised Kosovo's independence. And western attempts to rally support for Georgia in the Caucasus crisis will be rebuffed by the Russians.

"The EU has collectively failed to adapt to new power trends," said Martti Ahtisaari, the former Finnish president and a chairman of the thinktank.

The setbacks for the west at the UN in New York are compounded by a worse record in winning the battles for rights and freedoms at the Geneva-based UN Human Rights Council. In March the Islamic bloc changed the mandate for the council's rapporteur on freedom of expression, charging him, in the wake of the Danish cartoons crisis, with the obligation to record blasphemy. Critics said the post was supposed to function as an agent of liberty, but became an instrument of repression.

"The head of steam building up in the Islamic world for worldwide defamation legislation is huge," said Keith Porteous-Wood, director of Britain's National Secular Society. "The Human Rights Council can no longer serve a useful purpose."

In the council's two-year existence, the 19 European countries on the 47-strong body have been marginalised, mired in despair and a sense of futility after losing more than half the votes conducted.

This is liberal black intelligensia on display.

Politics: A typical vile piece of work by Rebecca Walker of theroot.com throwing every liberal smear at Cindy McCain because she is "just asking."

Together with Michael Baisden's white GOP women rape observation this is pretty much how the Obama supporters have been over the last couple of months. No smear or lie is too disgusting to throw out.

Obama's pro illegal ad against McCain laughable.

Politics: First linking McCain to Rush Limbaugh is Olbermann levels of Cognitive dissonance. The ad is such a blatant mix of lies that even Tapper is calling him out on it. But unlike McCain's truthful sex ed spot on Obama which set the media howling, don't expect any more of this fact checking from the MSM.

It is blatantly obvious he is trying to make McCain come out for some sort of pro amnesty statement to damper GOP support. It has to be because calling McCain anti-Amnesty is just stupid. As for Rush's comments being taken out of context, Obama camp knows they can get away with it since the MSM won't call them out for again race baiting an issue.

Lay off Ed Hochuli damn it.

Sports: He screwed up which does happen in the NFL. It wasn't his fault the Chargers didn't stop the touchdown AND 2 point conversion.

Ed Hochuli's acknowledgement that he erred on a call late in Sunday's San Diego-Denver game will mean lower grades for one of the NFL's highest profile referees.

"Officials are held accountable for their calls. They are graded on every play of every game," NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said Monday. "Ed has been an outstanding official for many years, but he will be marked down for this call. Under our evaluation system, an official's grades impact his status for potentially working the playoffs and ultimately whether or not he is retained."

The play occurred with the Broncos at the Chargers 1-yard-line in the final minute. Denver quarterback Jay Cutler dropped back to pass, the ball slipped out of his hands, bounced off the grass and into the arms of San Diego linebacker Tim Dobbins.

Hochuli ruled it an incomplete pass. Replay ruled it a fumble, but it was spotted at the 10-yard line, where the ball hit the ground, and given to Denver because the rules did not permit possession to be awarded to San Diego because the whistle had blown.

Denver went on to score, convert a 2-point conversion and win 39-38.

The play also is likely to be reviewed in the offseason by the league's competition committee, which normally reviews all controversial plays.

"It's going to require a great deal of discussion," said Titans coach Jeff Fisher, the cochairman of the competition committee. "It's happened at times. It happened in a game against us at Indianapolis years ago. ... When the whistle blows and the pass is ruled incomplete, there's just no way currently that you can award possession."

So Obama did try to hold up the Iraq agreement.

Iraq: Nice doubletalk.

Barack Obama said yesterday he didn't urge Iraq to hold up an agreement with the Bush administration over the status of US troops serving in Iraq.

"Obama has never urged a delay in negotiations, nor has he urged a delay in immediately beginning a responsible drawdown of our combat brigades," said Wendy Morigi, an Obama spokeswoman in response to a column in yesterday's Post.

Morigi cited "outright distortions" in an column by Amir Taheri, but the Obama camp did not specifically dispute any of the quotes in the piece.

The article quoted Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari in an interview saying Obama said it might be better to delay an agreement.

"He asked why we were not prepared to delay an agreement until after the US elections and the formation of a new administration in Washington," Zebari said.

Zebari said Obama wanted congressional approval of a deal, and said it was better not to have the agreement negotiated while the administration was in a "state of weakness and political confusion."

Please, he knew what would happen if they went to congress which would be a stall tactic made to look not like a stall tactic. Cute try but the story is true from the looks of it.

Christmas and Easter banned from UK college calendars.

UK: Well this is the earliest I have seen one of these stories.

CHRISTMAS and Easter have been scrubbed from a college’s calendars in case they offend non-Christians.

Holidays at these times will now be referred to simply as “end of term breaks”.

The move will “increase inclusion and diversity”, claim bosses at Yorkshire Coast College in Scarborough, North Yorks. They claim this is in line with Ofsted guidelines.

But Ofsted has confirmed there are no such guidelines: "Ofsted inspection guidance for colleges makes no reference whatsoever to the observance of religious festivals," a spokeswoman said.

"It is therefore incorrect that any decision to 'ban religious holidays' would be based on Ofsted guidance."

And politicians and religious groups branded the ruling “beyond barmy”. Robert Goodwill, Tory MP for Scarborough, said: “This is absolutely bonkers. We are a Christian country and religious tolerance is about respecting other people’s religious beliefs.

France leads on tough EU immigration pact.

Immigration: We can't can't get even a third of what is in this bill passed over here in America for tougher immigration enforcement.

That seems accurate enough. But it is hard to avoid the impression that, when it comes to immigration, Nicolas Sarkozy and his ministers in Paris have their fingers on the pulse of public opinion. Brice Hortefeux, France’s minister for immigration, integration, national identity and the development of social solidarity (a revealing job title in itself!), says he wants a Europe that “will not be a fortress, but equally not a sieve letting through everything … organising legal immigration and putting a stop to illegal immigration”.

Even the European Commission admits there are up to 8m illegal immigrants in the EU. Except that these days the use of the word “illegal” is discouraged, in favour of terms such as “irregular” or “undocumented” migrants.

Significantly, the French pact, at least in its latest draft, prefers the word “illegal”.

Now Muslims at Nebraska Swift Plant walk off job.

Nation: How coincidental.

GRAND ISLAND, Neb. -- Workers who walked off the job at a Grand Island packing plant in a dispute over Muslim prayer time have not been fired, a company spokeswoman said.

But the president of the local United Food and Commercial Workers Union said Thursday that changing the breaks might not be feasible for other workers in the JBS Swift & Co. meatpacking plant.

"I don't know that I can agree to that because I have 1,700 other people to worry about," said Dan Hoppes, Local 22 union president. "I have to look and see what they've got in mind."

In a statement, Swift said company management met with union leadership and local Muslim leaders to address the timing of the second-shift lunch break.

"Our hope is that we can strike a balance between a reasonable accommodation of their requests and our operational requirements," according to the statement.

One woman said she was kicked by a supervisor when she attempted to pray. Another woman said she was followed into the bathroom by a supervisor when she attempted to pray there.

More than 100 workers at a Greeley, Colo., Swift plant were fired last week because the company said they walked away from work before their shifts ended.

The workers blamed the company's refusal to allow their breaks to coincide with sunset so they could pray.

The bogus House approves off shore drilling.

Enviro: Pathetic. This is the definition of an empty bill.

The House voted late Tuesday to open waters off the Atlantic and Pacific coasts to oil and gas drilling but only 50 or more miles out to sea and only if a state agrees to energy development off its shore.

Democratic leaders called it a step toward energy independence, but Republicans labeled it a "sham" because most of the estimated 18 billion barrels of oil believed to lie below off-limits coastal waters are within 50 miles of land and will remain out of bounds.

Unlike bills offered by House Republicans and others being considered in the Senate, the House-passed legislation would not share royalties from energy production with the adjacent states. Boehner said without royalty sharing, states probably would not opt for drilling off their beaches.

Republicans also cited Interior Department estimates that 88 percent of the 18 billion barrels of oil believed to be in waters now under drilling bans would remain off-limits because they are within the 50-mile protective coastal buffer.

Dems save Charles Rangel from humiliation.

Politics: Only thing saving his behind is identity politics.

Representative Charles B. Rangel met behind closed doors with House leaders on Monday evening, as he faced increasing pressure to relinquish his position as chairman of the Ways and Means Committee.

Mr. Rangel, a Harlem Democrat, has been under fire in recent weeks for an assortment of ethical questions. Late last week, Nancy Pelosi, the speaker of the House, brushed aside Republican requests that he step down, saying they were an attempt to politicize his problems during an election season.

But with Mr. Rangel acknowledging on Monday that there were more errors and omissions on his financial disclosure forms, and announcing that he would hire a forensic accounting firm to pore over his records, Democrats have been forced to consider whether Mr. Rangel’s continued leadership will hurt the party’s candidates this fall.

Mr. Rangel also huddled with members of the Ways and Means Committee, and when he emerged, he declined to respond to questions about whether he was still chairman. However, Representative Sander Levin, a Michigan Democrat, called out to reporters, “You’re damned right he’s still the chairman.”

Vote for Obama cause.. he is black!

Politics: I love Joe Biden.

“Democratic vice presidential candidate Joe Biden, campaigning in North Carolina where black votes could help swing the state to the Democrats, said today that electing a black person to the White House would be transformative.

Biden said the policies of running mate Barack Obama make his presidency even more urgent and declared this to be the most important election that any living person has seen in their lifetime. But he particularly singled out the meaning of electing someone who is black.

“That will be a transformative event in American politics and internationally,” Biden said. “That all by itself will be significant.”

Michael Baisden and the white GOP women rape example

Culture: This happened on 09/15/2008 after the 6pm est break about 3 mins on the Michael Baisden Show..

The sad part is this is what passes as stimulating intellectual conversation on liberal black radio. According to the "bad boy" of radio, if a white Republican woman who is against abortion but her daughter got raped by a hispanic or black man, then you know the white Republican woman would want the option to have an abortion. Then he ties it into Gov. Palin views.

"So you gonna let her take the black/latino man baby to term?" "See.. we are very hypocritical man and that is what Gov.Palin's mentality is even in the cases of rape and incest the child should be carried to term."

The implication in his mind that a white woman with a daughter who got raped by a white man would not even think about abortion. But Latino/Black man then every Republican woman who is against abortion would want it now.

Someone get the sound bite since he has a paid service to see if I am just talking nonsense. But if this garbage was on any other radio show, all hell would break loose.

Europe flirting with recession and they are screwed

EU: In time of economic crisis, countries come together to forge a solution that will benefit all....EU unfortunately is not that group. Here is the problem.

The 15 countries sharing the euro are teetering on the brink of recession but should just escape the worst, the European Commission said on Wednesday, slashing its economic forecasts for this year.

However Germany, the eurozone's largest economy which contracted 0.5 percent in the second quarter, and Spain will not be so lucky, falling into recession as growth falters badly.

Britain, outside the eurozone, will share the same fate, according to estimates from the European Union's executive arm.

The commission cut its eurozone growth estimate for the whole of 2008 to 1.3 percent from a forecast of 1.7 percent given in April, marking an even sharper slowdown from the solid 2.6 percent growth recorded last year.

"The economic slowdown will be quite pronounced and longer than initially foreseen," said Luxembourg Finance Minister Jean-Claude Juncker, who chairs regular meetings of his eurozone counterparts.

"I could see risks of a technical recession beginning to loom over the zone," Juncker told lawmakers at the European Parliament.

After the eurozone economy contracted 0.2 percent in the second quarter, the commission predicted it would stall in the third quarter and expand only 0.1 percent in the final three months.

If that forecast bears out, it would mean that the eurozone will be spared a technical recession, which economists define as two consecutive quarters of contracting economic activity.

However, Germany -- Europe's biggest economy -- was lurching into recession and Britain and Spain would follow in the second half of the year. France and Italy, despite slowing growth, would be spared, it said.

The bigger problem, no one wants to work to a common solution because it would be certain members will get screwed.

EU governments started talks Saturday on ways to curb soaring prices that have hit their economy hard by holding back consumer spending.

Faced with higher prices at the gas pump and grocery store, Europeans are spending less on other purchases this year — hurting an economy that relied on domestic demand for growth.

EU finance ministers on Friday refused to follow in U.S. footsteps with a massive billion-dollar state spending program to boost growth — meaning they have to seek more indirect ways to encourage spending while inflation stays near record-high levels.

One thing they can do is reduce the standard sales tax band — between 15 percent and 25 percent — for some goods and services. But to do that, they need the unanimous backing of all 27 EU nations. And few governments are willing to change their tax rates to suit their neighbors.

Zimbabwean leaders to ink landmark deal Monday

Africa: Two alphas in one place to lead can never work. I give it six months before it falls apart.

Zimbabwe's political leaders were on Monday expected to sign a landmark political deal which will see the country's political rivals working together for the first time.
The new government is the result of protracted talks which involved the ruling ZANU-PF, led by Robert Mugabe, Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) under Morgan Tsvangirai and a splinter faction led by Arthur Mutambara which had been stalled by disagreements over the structure and composition of a government last month.

The main opposition Sunday said its national governing council had agreed to support the power-sharing deal.

"The national governing council has agreed to support this all inclusive government. It is hoped that this new deal will provide a new dawn and a new direction for the country, although there were some concerns on the issues of governors and the appointment of ministers by some of the members," Nelson Chamisa, MDC spokesperson told AFP.

The announcement by the MDC came a day after ZANU-PF's politburo had also endorsed the accord.

ACORN again with fraudulent voter registration forms.

Politics: It seems to be a running theme with this group.

Several municipal clerks across the state are reporting fraudulent and duplicate voter registration applications, most of them from a nationwide community activist group working to help low- and moderate-income families.

The majority of the problem applications are coming from the group ACORN, Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now, which has a large voter registration program among its many social service programs. ACORN's Michigan branch, based in Detroit, has enrolled 200,000 voters statewide in recent months, mostly with the use of paid, part-time employees.

"There appears to be a sizeable number of duplicate and fraudulent applications," said Kelly Chesney, spokeswoman for the Michigan Secretary of State's Office. "And it appears to be widespread."

Chesney said her office has had discussions with ACORN officials after local clerks reported the questionable applications to the state. Chesney said some of the applications are duplicates and some appear to be names that have been made up. The Secretary of State's Office has turned over several of the applications to the U.S. Attorney's Office.

The U.S. Attorney's Office on Friday declined to confirm whether an investigation was taking place.

In recent years, ACORN's voter registration programs have come under investigation in Ohio, Colorado, Missouri and Washington, with some employees convicted of voter fraud.

ACORN officials said they were looking into the problem.

Senator Claire McCaskill: McCain is old and cancerous.

Politics: Seriously, this is the new line of get tough attacks by Obama? Seriously?

On This Week with George Stephanopoulos this morning, Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., a surrogate for the campaign of Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., raised the age and health of Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., when discussing the qualifications, or lack thereof, of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin.

McCaskill said she stood by her remarks that she's "uncomfortable with anyone, regardless of gender, that is going to be vice president to one of the oldest presidents we've ever had that has never met a world leader."

When Stephanopoulos asked her it was fair to raise McCain's age, McCaskill doubled-down and mentioned his past skin cancer, saying, "I think what we're talking about is a reality. Other people talk about his melanoma. We're talking about a reality here that we have to face. This is someone who's going to be one heartbeat away from the presidency. All of us know it. I just think that it's the facts, George, and that's something that we need to start focusing on, are the facts, instead of distortions and lies."

UK quietly allows official sharia courts.

UK: This is a very smart move to have official sharia court and do it in a way sure to tick people off.

ISLAMIC law has been officially adopted in Britain, with sharia courts given powers to rule on Muslim civil cases.

The government has quietly sanctioned the powers for sharia judges to rule on cases ranging from divorce and financial disputes to those involving domestic violence.

Rulings issued by a network of five sharia courts are enforceable with the full power of the judicial system, through the county courts or High Court.

Previously, the rulings of sharia courts in Britain could not be enforced, and depended on voluntary compliance among Muslims.

It has now emerged that sharia courts with these powers have been set up in London, Birmingham, Bradford and Manchester with the network’s headquarters in Nuneaton, Warwickshire. Two more courts are being planned for Glasgow and Edinburgh.

Sheikh Faiz-ul-Aqtab Siddiqi, whose Muslim Arbitration Tribunal runs the courts, said he had taken advantage of a clause in the Arbitration Act 1996.

Here is the windup.

In fact, Muslim tribunal courts started passing sharia judgments in August 2007. They have dealt with more than 100 cases that range from Muslim divorce and inheritance to nuisance neighbours.

It has also emerged that tribunal courts have settled six cases of domestic violence between married couples, working in tandem with the police investigations.

Here is the pitch.

Politicians and church leaders expressed concerns that this could mark the beginnings of a “parallel legal system” based on sharia for some British Muslims.

Dominic Grieve, the shadow home secretary, said: “If it is true that these tribunals are passing binding decisions in the areas of family and criminal law, I would like to know which courts are enforcing them because I would consider such action unlawful. British law is absolute and must remain so.”

Douglas Murray, the director of the Centre for Social Cohesion, said: “I think it’s appalling. I don’t think arbitration that is done by sharia should ever be endorsed or enforced by the British state.”

OUTTA HERE!

There are concerns that women who agree to go to tribunal courts are getting worse deals because Islamic law favours men.

Siddiqi said that in a recent inheritance dispute handled by the court in Nuneaton, the estate of a Midlands man was divided between three daughters and two sons.

The judges on the panel gave the sons twice as much as the daughters, in accordance with sharia. Had the family gone to a normal British court, the daughters would have got equal amounts.

In the six cases of domestic violence, Siddiqi said the judges ordered the husbands to take anger management classes and mentoring from community elders. There was no further punishment.

In each case, the women subsequently withdrew the complaints they had lodged with the police and the police stopped their investigations.

Siddiqi said that in the domestic violence cases, the advantage was that marriages were saved and couples given a second chance.

Inayat Bunglawala, assistant secretary-general of the Muslim Council of Britain, said: “The MCB supports these tribunals. If the Jewish courts are allowed to flourish, so must the sharia ones.”

Now watch Fleet Street hunt down cases that have been filed where the punishment or rulings are totally out of whack with British law. I give it a month.

PM Brown talking to Obama aides for his re-election campaign?

Politics: Maybe this explains the scattershot methods of the Obama camp over the last couple of months.

Gordon Brown was plunged into a new row with America last night after it was disclosed that Downing Street is secretly trying to recruit some of Barack Obama’s officials to join Labour’s election campaign team.

Staff from No10 have approached Mr Obama’s US Democratic Party to discuss whether his polling and strategy chiefs could help Mr Brown defeat David Cameron.

The move is certain to inflame tensions between Mr Brown and Republican Presidential contender John McCain after the Prime Minister praised Mr Obama in a magazine article last week.

It is understood the approach to the Obama camp was made by former advertising executive David Muir, hired by Mr Brown earlier this year in an attempt to revive his political fortunes. The Mail on Sunday has been told that Mr Muir was responsible for approving the controversial article in which Mr Brown paid tribute to Mr Obama, without even referring to Mr McCain.

Today’s disclosure that Mr Brown is hoping to sign up members of Mr Obama’s team after the American election in November could have serious consequences for Anglo-US relations if, as many pollsters are now predicting, Mr McCain wins.

Mr Brown has had links with the Democrats for decades. The Prime Minister is a long-time admirer of failed Presidential challenger Hillary Clinton and it is not the first time he has turned to Democrat allies for help.

Last year, he had dinner with three of the party’s most senior spin-doctors of recent times, Bob Shrum, Mark Penn and Stan Greenberg.

He asked them how he could recover from his disastrous decision not to hold a snap autumn General Election. For several months Mr Shrum even had a desk in No10.
